Edwin Clarence Burling was born in Saxon Street on 27th October 1903(Newmarket Q4-1904 3B:442), the son of Walter and Susanna BURLING (née COOK). He started his education at Woodditton Junior Middle Infants School.

1911 census...Aged 7, he was at Saxon Street with his father Walter J. Burling [37] a carter, born Saxon Street; his mother Susannah [36] born Wickhambrook; sisters Winnie May [9], Dorothy Maud [6] and Nellie Rose, all born in Saxon Street. There had been one other sibling, who had died. In 1929 he married Nellie Elizabeth FITCH [29/1/1905-1971] (Risbridge Q3-1929 4A:2617). Probate gave his address as 10 Brooklyn Cottages, Burwell, in favour of Alfred William COLE (lorry driver), his brother in law, husband of sister Winnie May.

In the 1939 register, he and Nellie were living at 10 Brooklyn Cottages, North Street, Burwell, also there was Mrs Gladys McGlasham [17-5-1909] There are three closed records. Edwin was a journeyman house painter.




The 11th City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) were in North Africa from November 1942, first as part of 1st Army, part of Middle East Forces from July 1943 then moving on to Italy in September 1943 as part of the 8th Army.
So far the exact location of his unit has not been found, but Medjez-el-Bab was the front line of the Allied advance at the end of 1942 and remained so until the Allies advanced again in April/May 1943.



Edwin Burling is buried in Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia, grave 9:F:3
